Slice the Onions
Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/2 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.
Prepare the Batter
In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well. In another bowl, beat the egg and then add the milk. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, stirring until smooth.

Dunk each onion ring into the batter, ensuring they are fully coated. Then, roll the battered rings in breadcrumbs until evenly coated. If using, sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the coated onion rings.
Frying
Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
Repeat
Repeat the frying process with the remaining onion rings, allowing the oil to return to temperature between batches.
