Preparation

1

Warm the glass

Preheat your heatproof glass or mug by filling it with hot water for about 30 seconds. Discard the water and dry the glass. Warming the glass helps keep the coffee hot longer.

2

Brew coffee

Brew 6 oz of hot, strong coffee. Use a drip, pour-over, or French press; the coffee should be freshly brewed and served immediately.

Assemble the Irish Coffee

3

Add 1 tsp brown sugar to the warmed glass.

4

Pour in 1 oz Jameson Irish Whiskey over the sugar.

5

Pour the 6 oz hot coffee into the glass, leaving roughly 1/2 inch (1 cm) of space at the top to allow for the cream float. Stir vigorously with a bar spoon until the sugar is fully dissolved (about 10–15 seconds).

6

Lightly whip 1 tbsp heavy cream so it’s slightly thickened but still pourable. Hold a spoon upside down over the coffee, and gently pour the cream over the back of the spoon so it floats on top of the coffee, creating a cream layer.

7

Optionally garnish with a single whole coffee bean floated on the cream or a light dusting of grated nutmeg or cocoa powder.

8

Serve immediately without stirring so the drinker sips the hot coffee through the cool cream.
