Method
Base carbonated beverage
- 1
Chill glass (optional): Place the serving glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare ingredients, then discard water.
- 2
Add ice: Fill the serving glass about three-quarters full (≈1 cup) with fresh ice cubes.
- 3
Measure syrup: Pour 1/2 cup (4 fl oz) of the desired soda syrup into a measuring cup. Adjust quantity to taste for a stronger or weaker flavor, but keep syrup concentrated—most fountain systems mix at about 4:1 (carbonated water : syrup) or stronger depending on syrup concentration.
- 4
Add carbonated water: Slowly pour 2 cups (16 fl oz) of chilled carbonated water over the syrup and ice. Pour gently down a spoon or the inside edge of the glass to reduce foaming.
- 5
Stir gently: Use a long spoon or straw to stir the beverage 2–3 times just to combine syrup and carbonated water without flattening carbonation.
Ice and garnish
- 6
Garnish: If desired, squeeze the lemon wedge over the drink and drop it in. Add a maraschino cherry on top or skewer it on the rim.

Alternative/add-in options (optional)

Flavor shots
Add a 1 tsp flavor syrup (vanilla, cherry, lime) to the glass before pouring carbonated water for a flavored variant. Stir gently after adding water.
- 9
Fruit splash
For a fruitier drink, add 1 tbsp of orange, cranberry, or lime juice to the syrup before adding carbonated water. Stir gently.
- 10
Sweetness adjustment
If the beverage is too tart or not sweet enough, add 1 tsp simple syrup and stir gently. For a colored sweet accent (like sunrise), pour 1 tsp grenadine down the inside of the glass after mixing to create a layered look.
