Method
Simple Limonana Base
- 1
Make simple syrup
Combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium, stirring, until sugar fully dissolves. Bring to a gentle simmer for 1 minute, then remove from heat and let cool to room temperature (about 15 minutes).
- 2
While the syrup cools, juice lemons to yield 1 cup (about 4–6 lemons depending on size). If using, grate 1 tablespoon lemon zest and set aside.
- 3
In a pitcher, combine the cooled simple syrup, 1 cup fresh lemon juice and 2 cups cold water. Stir to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness or dilution by adding up to 1 more cup water if it's too sweet. Chill in refrigerator while you prepare mint purée.
Mint Purée
- 4
Place 1 packed cup fresh mint leaves and 1 tablespoon cold water in a blender or small food processor. Pulse 8–12 times until the leaves are very finely chopped and a bright green purée forms. Do not over-blend into complete liquid — a slightly coarse purée keeps more aroma.
- 5
Strain the mint purée through a fine-mesh sieve into a small bowl, pressing with a spoon to extract as much flavorful liquid as possible. Discard solids. You should get about 2–3 tablespoons of mint-infused liquid.
- 6
Stir the mint liquid into the chilled lemonade base. Taste and add more mint purée if a stronger mint flavor is desired (up to the full amount produced).
Citrus & Finish
- 7
Prepare the citrus to blend: peel and segment 1 orange (remove as much white pith as possible) and peel and quarter 1 lime. Optional: reserve a few lemon slices for garnish.
- 8
In a blender, combine the lemonade+mint mixture (about 4 cups), the orange segments, lime pieces, and 4 cups of ice. If your blender is small, work in two batches. Pulse and blend on high until smooth and frothy, about 30–45 seconds. If you prefer a thinner beverage, add up to 1 cup cold water or 1 cup sparkling water and pulse once to combine.
- 9
Taste and adjust: if too tart, sweeten with 1–2 teaspoons simple syrup; if too strong, add water or sparkling water to taste.
- 10
Serve immediately: pour into 4 glasses over additional ice if desired, top each with a splash (about 2 tablespoons) of sparkling water for fizz (optional). Garnish each glass with a fresh mint sprig and a lemon slice.
- 11
Leftovers: keep refrigerated in a sealed pitcher for up to 48 hours (add ice and sparkling water just before serving).
