Coffee
Spirits & sweetener
Cream & garnish
Method
Prepare coffee
- 1
Brew
Brew 6 fl oz of strong hot coffee immediately before assembling the drink. Use a French press or drip coffee with slightly more coffee grounds than usual for a bolder cup.
- 2
Preheat the serving glass by rinsing it with hot water, then discard the water. This keeps the drink hot longer.
Mix spirits and sweetener
- 3
In the warmed serving glass (an Irish coffee glass or heatproof mug), add 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar. Pour in 1.5 fl oz bourbon.
- 4
Top with cream and garnish
- 5
Lightly whip 2 tablespoons heavy cream with 1 teaspoon whole milk (if using) just until it reaches soft, pourable peaks — it should be thick but still pourable.
- 6
Gently pour the whipped cream over the back of a spoon so it floats on top of the coffee, creating a distinct cream layer.
- 7
Grate a little fresh nutmeg (about 1 tsp) over the cream and finish with an orange twist or cinnamon stick if desired.
Serve
- 8
Serve immediately while hot. Drink through the cream layer so each sip combines hot coffee and warmed cream.
