Brewed Coffee
Optional Additions
Method
Brewed Coffee
- 1
Measure and grind
Weigh 50 g (0.05 kg) of freshly roasted whole coffee beans. Grind to the appropriate grind size for your brew method: coarse for French press, medium for drip, fine for pour-over or espresso. Aim for a uniform grind for consistent extraction.
- 2
Heat water
Heat 600 ml (0.6 l) of filtered water to the proper temperature. For most methods, target 90–96°C (just off the boil). If using a kettle without temperature control, bring to a boil and rest 30–45 seconds.
- 3
Rinse and preheat (when applicable)
If using a paper filter (pour-over/drip), place the filter in the dripper and rinse it with hot water to remove paper taste and preheat the vessel. Discard rinse water. If using a French press, preheat the press with hot water, then discard.
- 4
Bloom (pour-over/French press)
Place the ground coffee in the dripper or French press. Pour just enough hot water (about twice the coffee weight — ~100 ml) to wet all grounds evenly. Let bloom for 30–45 seconds to release CO2 and improve extraction.
- 5
Continue pouring / brew
After the bloom, pour the remaining water in steady, controlled increments (for pour-over) or pour all remaining water for immersion methods. Total brew time: pour-over/drip 2:30–3:30 minutes, French press 4:00 minutes steep then press, espresso 20–30 seconds extraction. Adjust grind or time if coffee tastes over- or under-extracted.
- 6
Separate grounds
For pour-over or drip, allow coffee to finish dripping, then remove dripper/filter. For French press, gently press the plunger down after the 4-minute steep. For espresso, stop extraction when desired volume and crema are achieved.
- 7
Serve
Pour brewed coffee into a warmed cup. Taste and adjust strength in future brews by modifying coffee-to-water ratio slightly (common starting ratio 1:12 by weight — here 50 g : 600 g).
Optional Additions & Serving

Heat milk (optional)
If you want milk, heat 120 ml (0.12 l) gently on the stove or steam with an espresso machine to 60–65°C. For lattes, create microfoam by steaming; for warm milk, heat without boiling.
- 9
Sweeten and flavor
Stir in sugar (2 tsp), a pinch of salt to round flavor, or 1 tablespoon flavored syrup to taste. Add these to the cup before pouring coffee so they dissolve evenly.
