Method

Beverage base — Coffee

1

Measure coffee and water

Measure 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for a single 8–12 oz cup. Measure 12 oz (about 355 ml) of filtered water for brewing.

2

Heat water

Heat the filtered water to 195–205°F (just off a rolling boil). If you don’t have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let rest 30 seconds.

3

Brew (drip or French press)

Drip: Place grounds in filter, pour water over grounds and allow coffee maker to finish cycle. French press: Add grounds to carafe, pour hot water, stir gently, steep 4 minutes, then press plunger down slowly.

4

Serve coffee

Pour the brewed coffee into a cup. Taste and adjust with optional additions: add milk (about 2 tbsp), sweetener (about 1 tsp) or honey (1 tsp), and/or a dash of cinnamon. Stir to combine.

Beverage base — Tea

5

Heat water for tea

Heat filtered water to the appropriate temperature for your tea: 212°F for black/herbal tea, 175–185°F for green tea. If no thermometer, bring to a boil for black/herbal; let boil and cool 1–2 minutes for green.

6

Steep tea

Place 1 teaspoon of loose-leaf tea (or 1 tea bag) into a cup or infuser. Pour the hot water (about 8–12 oz) over the tea and steep: 3–5 minutes for black, 2–3 minutes for green, 5–7 minutes for herbal. Taste near the lower end and extend steeping if desired.

7

Remove leaves or bag

Remove the tea bag or infuser to stop steeping. If using loose leaves without infuser, strain into a cup.

8

Serve tea

Add optional additions as desired: milk (commonly for black tea, about 1–2 tbsp), sugar or honey (1 tsp), lemon wedge (squeeze to taste; do not add lemon to milk). Stir and taste.

Cleanup

9

Discard used coffee grounds or tea leaves/bags. Rinse and wash the brewing equipment, cup, and utensils with warm soapy water. Wipe down the counter.
