Method
Toast
- 1
Choose bread type
Decide which bread you want to serve as a side. Options here are white, multigrain, or marble rye. Use 1–2 slices per person depending on appetite.
- 2
- 3
Prepare fat for toasting
In a small bowl, combine the unsalted butter and olive oil. Microwave or let sit at room temperature until spreadable, or melt gently if you prefer pan-toasting.
- 4
Toast in toaster (quick method)
Place chosen bread slices in the toaster and toast to medium or until edges are golden and the center is lightly crisp. Remove and immediately spread about 1/2 tablespoon of the butter mixture on each slice so it melts into the surface. Sprinkle a light pinch (about 1/16–1/8 tsp) of coarse sea salt and a tiny grind of black pepper over buttered slices if desired.
- 5
Toast in skillet (crispy edges method)
Heat a nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium. Add a thin film of the butter–oil mixture (about 1/2 tablespoon total) to the pan. Place slices in the skillet and cook 1–2 minutes per side, pressing lightly, until golden-brown and crisp. Remove and brush remaining butter mixture on the warm slices. Season with the coarse sea salt and black pepper while hot.
- 6
Keep warm
If making multiple slices, keep finished toast on a baking sheet in a 200°F (95°C) oven for up to 10–15 minutes so they stay warm and crisp without overbrowning.
Optional spreads & garnishes
- 7
Jam or honey
For a sweet accompaniment, spread about 1–2 teaspoons of your chosen jam or honey evenly over each warm toast slice. Serve immediately so the spread softens but doesn't run.
- 8
Cream cheese
Soften cream cheese by letting it sit at room temperature 10 minutes or microwave 5–8 seconds. Spread about 1 tablespoon (2 tbs) across two slices and smooth with the back of a spoon.
- 9
Avocado mash
Mash half a ripe avocado with 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice and a pinch of salt and pepper. Spread over toast (about 1–2 tablespoons per slice). Optionally sprinkle red pepper flakes (a pinch) and chopped herbs (1 teaspoon) for brightness.
- 10
Serve
Arrange the chosen toast type(s) on a small plate as a side. Offer optional spreads and garnishes on the side or pre-spread, depending on service preference.
