Method

Bread

  1. 1

    Choose bread

Select one type of bread: white, multigrain, or marble rye. Use 1–2 slices per serving depending on appetite. (Quantity of slices is flexible; recipe servings assume 1 slice per serving.)

  2. 2

    Prepare toaster or pan

If using a toaster, set to medium (about 3–4 on a 1–6 scale). If using a skillet or oven, preheat a nonstick skillet over medium heat or preheat oven broiler to medium-high.

  3. 3

    Toast the bread

Toaster: place chosen slice(s) in the toaster and toast until golden brown and crisp at edges, about 2–3 minutes depending on setting. Skillet: brush one side of each slice with 1/2 tsp olive oil or thinly spread butter, place oil/buttered side down in the hot skillet and cook 1–2 minutes until golden, then flip and toast the other side 30–60 seconds. Oven broiler: place slices on a baking sheet, brush top lightly with olive oil or butter, broil 1–2 minutes per side watching closely to avoid burning.

Optional spreads & toppings

  1. 4

    Butter

If glazing with butter, immediately after toasting, spread about 1 teaspoon (approx. 1/3 tbs) of unsalted butter over warm toast so it melts into the surface. Use up to 1 tablespoon per 2 slices if desired.

  2. 5

    Jam or marmalade

Spread about 1 tablespoon of jam or marmalade on toast while still warm for a sweet finish.

  3. 6

    Cream cheese

Allow cream cheese to soften for a few minutes at room temperature, then spread about 1 tablespoon over warm toast for a creamy topping. Optionally season with a pinch (about 1/8 tsp) salt and freshly ground black pepper.

  4. 7

    Savory olive oil & seasoning

For a savory style, brush 1/2 teaspoon olive oil over toast and sprinkle a light pinch of salt (about 1/8–1/4 tsp) and a grind of black pepper. Serve immediately.
