Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Dissolve sugar

Place 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar in an old-fashioned (rocks) glass.

  2. 2

Add bitters and small mixing liquid

Add 3 dashes orange bitters and 0.25 oz (about 1/2 tablespoon) soda water to the glass. Stir until the sugar is mostly dissolved (10–15 seconds).

  3. 3

    Build the cocktail

Add 2 oz Maker's Mark bourbon, 0.25 oz Dr. McGillicuddy's Vanilla liqueur and 0.25 oz fresh lime juice to the glass.

  4. 4

    Add ice and stir

Add a large ice cube or several ice cubes. Stir gently for about 20–30 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the drink until the glass is cold to the touch.

  5. 5

    Garnish and serve

Express the oils of an orange peel over the glass by holding the peel with the colored side toward the drink and giving it a firm twist; rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass. Serve immediately.
