Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Muddle

Place the fresh blackberries and simple syrup into a cocktail shaker or mixing glass. Use a muddler or the back of a spoon to gently press and crush the berries until they release their juices — do not pulverize into a complete pulp; you want some texture and seeds removed by straining later.

  2. 2

    Add spirits and acid

Add the vodka, black raspberry liqueur, and fresh lemon juice to the shaker with the muddled berries.

  3. 3

    Ice and shake

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold. This chills and slightly dilutes the drink for balance.

  4. 4

    Double strain

Prepare a chilled coupe, martini, or rocks glass. Double-strain the cocktail through a fine mesh strainer into the glass to remove seeds and large berry bits. Use a Hawthorne or julep strainer plus the fine mesh if available.

Finish & Serve

  1. 5

    Top with soda

Gently float or pour the club soda (about 2 oz) over the back of a spoon into the glass to retain effervescence and create a light top.

  2. 6

    Garnish

Thread the fresh blackberry onto a cocktail pick and rest it on the rim with a lemon wheel. Optionally slap a mint sprig between your hands to release aroma and tuck it behind the garnish.

  3. 7

    Serve

Serve immediately while chilled. Stir lightly if desired to combine the soda with the cocktail layers. Enjoy as a refreshing, fruit-forward cocktail that highlights black raspberry flavor.
