Hibiscus Limeade Base
Dilution & Serving
Optional Booze (for Beers and Other Cans section pairing)
Method
Hibiscus Limeade Base
Make hibiscus concentrate
Combine dried hibiscus flowers, 4 cups water and granulated sugar in a medium saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Once simmering, reduce heat to low and simmer gently for 8 minutes, uncovered, allowing the liquid to take on a deep magenta color.
Remove the pan from heat and let the hibiscus steep for 10 more minutes off the heat to deepen flavor and color. Stir in lime zest while hot to release oils.
Strain the hibiscus through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a heatproof pitcher or bowl, pressing on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard solids. While still warm, stir in fresh lime juice until combined. Taste and adjust sweetness with more sugar if needed (dissolve by stirring while warm). Let the concentrate cool to room temperature, then chill in the refrigerator until cold (about 30–45 minutes).
Dilution & Serving
When ready to serve, fill a large pitcher halfway with ice. Pour the chilled hibiscus concentrate over the ice and add 4 cups cold water or sparkling water to dilute. Stir gently to combine. Taste and adjust dilution — add more water for a lighter limeade or less for a more intense flavor.
Fill individual glasses with ice, pour 6–8 oz of the hibiscus limeade per glass. Garnish each glass with a lime wheel or wedge and a sprig of mint if using.
Optional alcoholic service
To serve in the 'Beers and Other Cans' style: either serve the limeade alongside a chilled canned light beer/pilsner, or pour 1 oz white rum or vodka into individual glasses and top with the limeade for a spiked cocktail. For a playful presentation, float 4 oz of beer gently on top of the limeade by pouring the beer slowly over the back of a spoon.
Storage & Notes
Store leftover hibiscus concentrate covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Keep diluted limeade refrigerated and consume within 48 hours for best freshness. If using sparkling water, add right before serving to retain fizz.
