Cocktail

Method

Prep

1

Chill glass and beer

Place a rocks glass or short stemmed beer glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes. Keep the can of nitro or stout beer chilled until ready to pour.

2

If you want a coffee-rimmed glass, wet the rim lightly with a lemon wedge and dip in a shallow plate with finely ground coffee (optional).

Build the cocktail

3

Combine base spirits

In a cocktail mixing glass filled with ice, add 2 oz London dry gin, 1 oz cold-brew coffee concentrate, 0.5 oz coffee liqueur, 0.5 oz amaro, 0.25 oz simple syrup, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

4

Stir and chill

Stir the mixture briskly for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (use a bar spoon and large circular motion).

5

Strain

Remove the chilled glass from the freezer and strain the stirred cocktail into the glass over one large ice cube (or several smaller cubes).

6

Top with beer

Slowly pour or gently float 4 oz of the chilled nitro or stout beer over the back of a spoon onto the cocktail to create a layered effect. Pour gently to preserve the beer’s head.

Finish & serve

7

Express an orange twist over the drink to release oils, then drop the twist into the cocktail as garnish.

8

Serve immediately with a short straw or without; encourage the drinker to enjoy the contrast of bitter coffee, herbal amaro, bright lemon and the creamy beer head.
