1

Prepare glass

Chill a coupe or Nick & Nora glass by filling it with ice and a little cold water, or place it in the freezer for a few minutes while you mix the drink.

2

Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or shaker filled with plenty of ice, add 2 oz blended Scotch whisky, 0.75 oz sweet (red) vermouth, 0.5 oz bitter liqueur (or substitute amaro), 0.25 oz orange curaçao, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

3

Stir

Stir the mixture gently but thoroughly for 20–30 seconds (about 30–40 full strokes) until well chilled and slightly diluted. Use a bar spoon and a large bowl of ice if you have one to maintain temperature without over-diluting.

4

Strain

Discard the ice/water from the chilled glass. Double-strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora using a Hawthorne or julep strainer (and a fine mesh strainer if you want extra clarity).

5

Garnish and finish

Express the oils of an orange twist over the surface of the drink by holding the twist skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the cocktail and giving it a firm squeeze. Run the twist around the rim of the glass, then drop it into the drink as garnish.

6

Serve

Serve immediately while well chilled.
