Soda (single can)

Method

Soda (single can)

1

Prepare sweetened flavored syrup

In a small heatproof container, combine the sugar (35 g) with 30 ml of the carbonated water (reserve the rest chilled). Warm gently — either briefly in a microwave for 15–20 seconds or on the stovetop over low heat — just until the sugar fully dissolves. Stir to make a concentrated simple syrup base. Allow to cool to room temperature.

2

Add acids, flavor, color, and caffeine

To the cooled syrup, whisk in the phosphoric acid (0.75 tsp) or citric acid/lemon concentrate (1 tsp) depending on desired flavor profile (phosphoric for cola, citric for citrus). Add the natural/artificial flavoring (1 tsp) and caramel color or food coloring (2 ml) if using. If you want caffeinated soda, dissolve the caffeine (50 mg) into the syrup. Stir thoroughly to combine — this is your concentrated soda syrup.

3

Chill carbonated water

Ensure the remaining carbonated water (about 300 ml) is well chilled. Cold water holds carbonation better and produces a crisp soda.

4

Mix syrup with carbonated water

Slowly pour the chilled carbonated water into a clean chilled can or glass over a spoon or gently down the side to minimize foaming while simultaneously adding the concentrated syrup. For a 330 ml serving, add the entire concentrated syrup mixture to the 300–330 ml carbonated water and stir gently once or twice — avoid vigorous stirring to preserve carbonation.

5

Serve

Place 4 ice cubes into a serving glass if desired, pour the prepared soda over the ice, and garnish with a lemon or lime wedge if using. Serve immediately cold.

6

Notes on scaling and safety

This recipe approximates the composition of a single can (330 ml) of soda and uses measured acid and sweetener amounts for flavor balance. Adjust flavoring, sweetness, and acidity to taste. If producing larger batches, scale all components proportionally. When using concentrated acids (phosphoric), handle carefully and use food-grade ingredients only.
