Cocktail

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 10 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure the drink stays cold.

  2. 2

    Brew espresso

Brew a fresh double espresso (about 2 oz) and allow it to rest 20–30 seconds so it's hot but not boiling; this helps with extraction of crema when shaken.

Mixing

  1. 3

    Combine ingredients

Add the freshly brewed espresso, vodka, coffee liqueur, and simple syrup into the cocktail shaker.

  2. 4

    Add ice

Fill the shaker with ice until about 2/3–3/4 full. Using fresh, clean ice will give better dilution control.

  3. 5

Dry shake (optional for more crema)

If you prefer extra foam, first shake the mixture without ice for 8–10 seconds vigorously to emulsify and create crema.

  4. 6

    Wet shake

Add ice if you performed a dry shake (or if you didn't, make sure ice is in shaker) and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds. The shaker should become very cold and slightly frosted; this aerates the espresso and yields a silky foam.

  5. 7

    Double strain

Open the shaker and strain the cocktail through a fine mesh strainer into the chilled martini or coupe glass to remove small ice shards and achieve a smooth surface.

Finish

  1. 8

    Garnish

Carefully place three coffee beans on top of the foam in a triangular arrangement as a traditional garnish.

  2. 9

Serve immediately while cold. Enjoy responsibly.
