OLD FASHIONED

Delicious fruity light red. Pair well with grilled meats and vegetables.

Wash and hull the strawberries; halve them. Rinse raspberries gently. Thinly slice the orange and half the lemon into rounds; reserve a couple of slices for garnish.

Prepare fruit

In a large pitcher (at least 2.5–3 quart capacity), combine 1.5 liters of chilled light-bodied red wine with the prepared strawberries, raspberries, orange slices, and lemon slices. Stir gently to distribute the fruit evenly through the wine.

Lightly muddle about half of the fruit in the pitcher with the back of a wooden spoon or a muddler for 10–15 seconds to release juices and aroma, leaving the rest of the fruit intact for texture and visual appeal.

Add 3 tablespoons of simple syrup (or agave) to the pitcher and stir until incorporated. Taste and adjust: add up to 1–2 more tablespoons if you prefer a sweeter, fruit-forward profile.

Tear the mint leaves slightly to release oils (do not pulverize) and add them to the pitcher along with the optional cinnamon stick if using. Stir gently to mix aromatics into the wine.

Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to 4 hours. Chilling allows the fruit flavors and aromatics to infuse the wine while keeping the overall character light and fresh. Do not chill longer than 6 hours to avoid over-extraction of tannins from the fruit peels.

Just before serving, gently stir the chilled wine mixture. Add 1 cup of chilled club soda or sparkling water to lighten and add effervescence—pour slowly to preserve bubbles. If you prefer fully still chilled red, omit the club soda.

Fill glasses with ice (about 3/4 to 1 cup per serving). Spoon some of the macerated fruit into each glass, then pour the chilled wine blend over the ice, distributing bubbly and fruit evenly.

Garnish each glass with a fresh mint sprig and reserved orange or berry slices. Serve immediately.

Leftover: Refrigerate any remaining sangria in a sealed container for up to 48 hours. Add fresh soda just before serving to preserve bubbles. Discard fruit after 24–48 hours if it becomes too soft.
