OLD FASHIONED

Fresh assortment of berries along with a welcoming spice rack and a little bit of something tropical.

In a medium bowl, combine the quartered strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries with the granulated sugar and lemon juice. Gently toss to coat. Let sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes so the berries macerate and release juices.

Macerate berries

Stir in the vanilla, ground cinnamon, ground cardamom, and the pinch of allspice. Taste and adjust: add up to 1 more teaspoon sugar if you prefer sweeter, or another 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice if brighter acidity is needed.

Add warm spice notes

Using the back of a spoon or a muddler, lightly crush about half the macerated mixture to free more juice and distribute spices while leaving some whole berries for texture.

In a pitcher, pour the chilled pineapple juice and sparkling water. Add lime zest and gently bruise half the mint leaves between your palms to release aroma, then add to the pitcher.

Combine tropical elements

For a clearer chilled drink: pour the macerated berry mixture through a fine mesh sieve into the pitcher, pressing to extract juices and leaving seeds and solids behind; discard solids. For a more textured beverage: fold the macerated berries (whole and crushed) directly into the pitcher.

Strain or fold

Taste the combined beverage and adjust: add up to 1 tablespoon sugar or honey if sweeter is desired, or more lemon/lime juice if brighter. Refrigerate the pitcher for at least 20 minutes to let flavors meld, or serve immediately over ice if preferred.

Adjust balance & chill

Fill serving glasses with ice cubes. Pour the chilled mixture over ice, making sure each glass gets some berry pieces if you left them in. Slap remaining mint leaves and tuck a sprig into each glass.

Assemble glasses

Garnish each glass with a few whole berries, a thin lime slice on the rim, and a mint sprig. Serve cold. If making ahead for a party, keep the ice and sparkling water separate until serving to maintain fizz.
