Cocktail
Method
Cocktail
Chill glass
Place a rocks glass (or coupe if preferred) in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice and cold water while you prepare the cocktail to chill the glass.
Combine spirits
In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled about two-thirds with ice cubes (approximately 6–8 cubes), pour 1 oz rye whiskey, 1 oz Campari, and 1 oz sweet vermouth.
Prepare glass
If you chilled the glass with ice and water, discard the ice and water now. If you prefer the drink over ice, add fresh ice to the rocks glass.
Strain
Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the stirred cocktail into the chilled rocks glass. If serving up (no ice), use a chilled coupe or Nick and Nora and double-strain if desired.
Garnish
Express the oils of an orange twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding the twist skin-side down and giving it a quick squeeze, then run the twist around the rim and drop it into the drink.
Serve
Serve immediately. Recommend sipping slowly to appreciate the balance of bitter Campari, sweet vermouth, and spicy rye.
