Fresh Orange Juice
Method
Fresh Orange Juice
- 1
Prepare oranges
Wash the oranges thoroughly under cool running water to remove any dirt or residues. Pat them dry with a clean towel.
- 2
Roll oranges
On a clean countertop, firmly roll each orange under the palm of your hand for 10–15 seconds to loosen the juice inside. This makes juicing easier and yields more liquid.
- 3
Halve and juice
Cut each orange in half crosswise. If using a manual citrus juicer (reamer or press), press each half and extract the juice into a bowl or measuring cup. If using an electric citrus juicer, follow appliance instructions and collect the juice. If using a blender, peel and segment the oranges (remove as much pith as preferred), place segments in the blender, blend on medium for 20–30 seconds until pulpy, then strain through a fine-mesh sieve for a smoother juice.
- 4
Strain (optional)
If you prefer pulp-free juice, pour the extracted juice through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a pitcher, pressing gently on pulp to extract remaining liquid. Discard or reserve the pulp for other uses (smoothies, baking).
- 5
Adjust sweetness and acidity
Taste the juice. If it tastes too tart, dissolve the optional granulated sugar in the cold water (warm a tablespoon if needed, then cool) and stir into the juice. If it needs brighter acidity, add the optional fresh lemon juice and mix. If the juice is too strong, dilute with up to 1/2 cup cold water, adjusting to taste.
- 6
Chill and serve
Refrigerate the juice for at least 15 minutes if you want it fully cold, or serve immediately over ice cubes. Stir before pouring as fresh-squeezed juice can separate. Garnish with an orange wheel or mint sprig if desired.
- 7
Storage
Store leftover juice in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours for best flavor and freshness. Shake or stir before serving, as natural separation will occur.
