Mtn Dew (Copycat Fountain-Style)
Method
Mtn Dew (Copycat Fountain-Style)
- 1
Make concentrated syrup base
In a medium saucepan, combine the high-fructose corn syrup (or prepared simple syrup) and citric acid. Warm gently over low heat, stirring, just until the citric acid dissolves and the mixture is homogeneous (do not boil). Remove from heat.
- 2
Add juices and flavorings
Stir the fresh lemon juice, fresh lime juice, orange juice, and the grapefruit juice (if using) into the warm syrup until evenly combined. Add the natural lemon-lime flavoring and orange extract, then stir. If you want an extra bright color, add the food coloring a drop at a time until you reach the desired neon yellow-green.
- 3
Add caffeine component
Stir in the concentrated brewed green tea or a tablespoon of cooled brewed coffee to introduce the mild caffeine/tonal background characteristic of Mtn Dew. Mix thoroughly.
- 4
Cool the syrup
Allow the syrup to cool to room temperature, then chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Chilling improves carbonation retention when mixed.
- 5
Assemble the drink
In a large pitcher, add the chilled carbonated water. Gently pour in the chilled syrup mixture and stir carefully with a long spoon to combine — stir slowly to preserve carbonation. Aim for a ratio of about 1 part syrup to 2 parts carbonated water (this recipe yields roughly that balance) and adjust to taste.
- 6
Serve
Fill serving glasses with ice. Pour the combined Mtn Dew over ice. Taste and, if desired, add an extra splash of lemon or lime juice for brightness or more simple syrup if you prefer sweeter. Serve immediately.

Notes on substitutions
Simple syrup: to make 2 cups, dissolve 2 cups granulated sugar into 1 cup water over low heat, cool before using (use 2 cups simple syrup in place of HFCS). For a caffeinated version, use brewed coffee or store-bought caffeine powder measured carefully — the recipe uses only a small amount to mimic commercial levels. Adjust citric acid ±¼ tsp to change tartness.
