Fresh Orange Juice
Method
Fresh Orange Juice
Prepare oranges
Wash the oranges under cool running water and pat dry. Roll each orange firmly on the countertop with the palm of your hand to soften the fruit and help release more juice.
Cut and juice
Slice each orange in half crosswise. Using a manual citrus juicer, reamer, or an electric citrus press, press and twist each half to extract the juice into a bowl or pitcher. If using a blender, peel the oranges (remove pith if you prefer less bitterness), place sections in the blender, blitz for 10–20 seconds, then strain through a fine-mesh sieve if you want pulp-free juice.
Strain (optional)
If you prefer smoother juice with less pulp, pour the freshly pressed juice through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean pitcher, pressing the pulp gently with the back of a spoon to extract remaining liquid.
Adjust sweetness and flavor
Taste the juice. If it’s too tart or intense, stir in up to 1 cup cold water to dilute to your preference. If you want it sweeter, dissolve up to 1 tablespoon sugar or honey into a small amount of warm water and stir into the juice until combined. Add the optional 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice if you want a brighter flavor. Adjust sugar/honey and water to taste.
Chill and serve
Refrigerate the juice for at least 15 minutes to chill, or serve immediately over ice cubes. Stir before serving as natural separation may occur. Garnish with an orange wheel or mint if desired.
