Prepare ingredients
Rinse and bruise mint
Rinse the mint leaves under cold running water to remove any dirt. Gently shake off excess water and pat lightly with a towel. Gather the leaves and gently bruise them by crushing between your fingers or pressing once with the back of a spoon — this releases the aromatic oils.
Measure tea (optional)
If you prefer a tea base, measure 1 teaspoon loose black or green tea. Using tea is optional; mint alone makes a flavorful herbal infusion.
Brew
Bring the cold water to a near boil (about 95°C / 203°F) in a kettle. If using green tea, let water cool slightly to about 80–85°C (176–185°F) to avoid bitterness.
Place the bruised mint leaves (and the loose tea, if using) into a heatproof teapot or heatproof pitcher. Pour the hot water directly over the leaves and tea to fully submerge them.
Cover and steep: If using black tea, steep for 4–5 minutes with the mint. If using green tea, steep 2–3 minutes. If making mint-only herbal tea, steep 6–8 minutes for a robust mint flavor. Taste after the minimum steep time and steep longer if you prefer stronger flavor.
Finish and serve
Strain the tea into cups or a serving pitcher to remove leaves (use a fine mesh strainer). If you like sweeter tea, stir in honey or sugar 1–2 teaspoons while the tea is still warm so it dissolves easily.
