Cocktail Preparation

1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it for 3–5 minutes. Discard the ice water before pouring.

2

Combine base ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add 2 tablespoons gin, 1/2 tablespoon dry vermouth, 1/2 tablespoon orange liqueur, 1/2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, and 1/2 teaspoon simple syrup.

3

Add bitters and ice

Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to the shaker. Fill the shaker with ice cubes (about 6 standard cubes) so there's enough to chill and dilute the mix properly.

4

Shake

Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes very cold and slightly frosted. This properly chills and dilutes the cocktail.

5

Strain

Discard the ice from the chilled glass. Using a fine strainer if available, double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass to remove small ice shards and any pulp from the lemon juice.

6

Garnish

Express the oils from a fresh lemon twist over the drink by holding the twist skin-side down about 6 inches above the surface and giving it a quick squeeze. Rub the twist around the rim of the glass and drop it into the cocktail. Optionally smack a mint sprig between your palms to release aroma and lay it on the drink as a second garnish.

7

Serve

Serve immediately while cold. If you prefer the cocktail over crushed/cracked ice, fill a rocks glass with cracked ice and pour the strained cocktail over it instead—adjust garnish placement accordingly.
