Coffee Base

Method

Coffee Base

1

Weigh and grind

Weigh 60 g (0.06 kg) of whole coffee beans. Grind to a medium-coarse texture (similar to sea salt) appropriate for your pour-over device. Adjust grind slightly finer for a faster extraction device (V60), slightly coarser for a slower one (Chemex or Kalita Wave).

2

Prepare equipment

Place the paper filter in the cone and rinse it with hot water (about 30–60 ml) from the 200 ml rinse water. This warms the brewer and removes paper flavor. Discard rinse water and place the cone on your carafe or cup. Set the scale to zero with the cone and carafe in place.

3

Bloom

Add the ground coffee to the filter and level the bed. Start the timer and pour 120 ml of water (from the 200 ml bloom water) evenly over the grounds to saturate them. Allow the coffee to bloom for 30–45 seconds to release CO2 and promote even extraction.

4

Main pour

After bloom, continue pouring filtered water in slow, concentric circles from center outward without pouring directly on the filter paper. Pour steadily until you reach a total brew weight of 1000 ml (including the bloom pour). Aim to finish pouring between 3:00 and 3:30 minutes total brew time for a balanced extraction. If your device yields a slower drawdown, extend grind slightly coarser; if too fast, grind slightly finer and reduce pour speed.

5

Final draw and rest

Allow the brew to finish dripping; the total brew time should be about 3 to 4 minutes. Remove the dripper, gently swirl the carafe to homogenize the coffee, and discard the grounds and filter.

Brewing Additions (optional / template adjustments)

6

Salt enhancement (optional): If desired to subtly enhance sweetness and reduce perceived bitterness, dissolve 1/4 teaspoon (0.25 tsp) of coarse sea salt into the finished coffee and stir gently. Taste and adjust—add no more than a pinch at a time.

7

Milk / milk alternative: Steam or heat 120 ml of milk or milk alternative. For a latte-style Blueprint Coffee, pour the brewed coffee into your cup to about 2/3 full, add steamed milk to preference, and top with foam. For an Americano-style drink, add hot water instead of milk to reach desired strength (use remaining brew water as needed).

8

Sweetening: Add 15 ml (1 tbsp) simple syrup to taste if you prefer a sweetened version. Stir to combine.

Equipment & Misc

9

Clean equipment promptly: rinse the dripper, discard grounds, and clean the grinder and kettle to keep flavors fresh for future brews.

10

Tasting notes and adjustments: Taste the coffee black first. If it tastes sour (under-extracted), try a finer grind or a slightly longer brew time. If it tastes bitter (over-extracted), try a coarser grind or a shorter brew time. Adjust dose ±2 g, grind, and pour speed iteratively to dial in your preferred Blueprint Coffee profile.
