Method
Lemonade Base
Make simple syrup
In a small heatproof bowl or small saucepan, combine the granulated sugar (3 tbs) and hot water (0.25 cups). Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Let the syrup cool for 5 minutes.
Combine base liquids
In a 1.5–2 liter pitcher, pour the fresh lemon juice (1 cup) and the cooled simple syrup. Stir briefly to combine.
Add water and ice
Add the cold water (3 cups) to the pitcher and stir. Add the ice cubes (2 cups) or enough to chill the lemonade thoroughly; if you prefer less dilution, add ice to individual glasses instead of the pitcher.
Tropical Flavoring
Prepare juices
Measure and add the fresh pineapple juice (3/4 cup) and fresh orange juice (1/2 cup) to the pitcher with the lemonade base. Stir to incorporate. Taste for balance; the goal is a bright, tropical lemonade.
Add zest and mint
Grate 1 tsp of lime zest directly into the pitcher to brighten the flavors. Lightly clap or bruise 6 of the mint leaves between your palms to release their oils, then add them to the pitcher. Stir gently so the mint infuses without becoming bitter.
Optional adult version
If making a cocktail, stir in the light rum (4 tbs / 2 fl oz) now and mix. Adjust sweetness or citrus if needed after adding alcohol.
Garnish & Finish
Taste the Tropicana Lemonade and adjust: add up to 1–2 tbs more simple syrup if you prefer sweeter, or another 1–2 tbs lemon juice if you want it tarter. When balanced, transfer to glasses filled with ice (if pitcher ice was omitted) and garnish each glass with a lemon slice, pineapple wedge, and a mint sprig. For presentation, slide a lemon slice and pineapple wedge onto the rim and tuck a mint sprig into the glass.
Serve immediately chilled. Leftover lemonade can be refrigerated in a covered pitcher for up to 48 hours; stir gently before serving as juices may settle.
