Method
Milk (main)
Check and measure
Pour 4 cups whole milk into a clean measuring cup or pitcher. Inspect milk for freshness — smell and small visual check. If sour or off, discard and use fresh milk.
Warm (optional)
To serve warm, pour milk into a small saucepan and heat over low–medium heat until it reaches 120–140°F (49–60°C) for warm drinking. Stir frequently with a heatproof spatula to prevent a skin from forming and to avoid scalding. Do not let it boil; remove from heat as soon as small steam rises and tiny bubbles appear at the edge.
Scald (for recipes)
If your recipe calls for scalded milk (improves texture in some baked goods), heat milk in a saucepan over medium heat until small bubbles form around the edge and steam rises (about 180°F / 82°C). Stir gently to prevent sticking. Remove from heat immediately and let cool to the required temperature in the recipe.
Storage
Store unused milk in the refrigerator in a sealed container and consume within the date on the carton or within 5–7 days after opening. Do not leave milk out at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F / 32°C).
Optional flavoring / uses
Sweet vanilla milk
Warm or cold: Add 1 tablespoon granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to the measured 4 cups milk. Stir until sugar dissolves. If warming, heat gently as described above, stirring until combined. Serve immediately.
Cinnamon milk
Add 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon and a pinch of salt to the milk. Warm gently while whisking to fully incorporate the cinnamon. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve if you prefer a smoother texture. Serve warm or chilled.
Hot chocolate style
For a chocolate milk, whisk 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon sugar into a small amount (2–3 tablespoons) of hot milk to make a smooth paste. Gradually whisk that paste into the remaining warm milk until fully combined. Heat gently to desired temperature, do not boil. Adjust sweetness with extra sugar or honey to taste.
Honey milk
Stir 1 tablespoon honey into warm (not boiling) milk until dissolved. Serve warm before bed or chilled.
