Cocktail
Chill glass
Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure the drink stays cold and develops a nice crema.
Brew a fresh espresso shot (about 1 oz). If preparing in advance, allow the espresso to cool slightly but not go cold; warm espresso integrates better with ice and helps create crema.
Add the vodka, freshly brewed espresso, coffee liqueur, simple syrup, and coffee bitters (if using) to a cocktail shaker.
Fill the shaker with ice to near-top (about 1 cup) and secure the lid.
Dry shake then wet shake
Optional but recommended for a creamy crema: first shake vigorously without ice (dry shake) for 8–10 seconds to emulsify the espresso and create foam. Then add ice (if you didn't already) and shake hard for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is very cold and frothy.
Discard ice or water from the chilled glass, then double-strain the cocktail into the chilled martini or coupe glass using a fine mesh strainer in addition to the shaker strainer to capture small ice shards and any espresso particulates.
Garnish
Carefully float 3 coffee beans on the crema in the center of the drink as a classic garnish.
If desired, lightly dust the surface with a pinch (about 1/4 tsp) of fine cocoa powder or grate a little dark chocolate over the top for added aroma and presentation.
Serve immediately while the crema is fresh and frothy.
