Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Peel and Cut Potatoes

Peel the russet potatoes and cut them into equal-sized chunks (about 1-2 inches) to ensure they cook evenly.

  2. 2

    Boil Potatoes

In a large pot, add the cut potatoes and cover with cold water. Add 1 tablespoon of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium-low and simmer until the potatoes are tender, about 15-20 minutes.

Mashing

  1. 3

    Drain Potatoes

Once the potatoes are tender, drain them in a colander and let them sit for a minute to allow excess moisture to evaporate.

  2. 4

    Mash Potatoes

Return the drained potatoes to the pot. Add 4 tablespoons of butter and 1 cup of heavy cream. Use a potato masher or a hand mixer to mash until smooth and creamy.

Seasoning

  1. 5

    Add Seasonings

Stir in 1 teaspoon of black pepper and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Optional: stir in 2 tablespoons of chopped chives for added flavor.

  2. 6

    Serve

Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl and top with a pat of butter or additional chives if desired. Serve warm as a classic side dish.
