1. Glass preparation
Select a wide-bowled tasting glass (snifter) or a rocks glass. If you prefer your cognac slightly chilled and diluted, place one large ice cube or sphere into the glass. If you prefer neat, leave the glass empty of ice.
2. Pouring
Measure 2 oz of Hennessy XO and pour it gently into the prepared glass over the ice cube if using. Hold the bottle steady and pour close to the inside wall of the glass to preserve aromas.
3. Nosing and garnishing
Rest the glass in your hand to warm the cognac slightly (if served neat) and swirl gently once. Bring the glass to your nose and inhale to appreciate the complex bouquet. If using an orange peel, express the oils by holding the peel over the glass, skin-side down, and giving it a quick twist so the citrus oils spray over the surface, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it in (or discard).
4. Tasting
Take a small sip, let the liquid coat your palate, breathe gently through your nose and mouth to notice flavors and finish. Sip slowly — Hennessy XO is meant to be savored.
