Milk Preparation

1

Basic chilled milk

If serving plain cold milk, pour 4 cups of whole milk from the container into a clean pitcher. Stir briefly with a ladle to ensure even consistency. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes if not already cold. Serve immediately in glasses. Optional: add ice cubes if desired.

2

Lightly diluted milk (for thinner consistency)

Combine 4 cups whole milk with 1/2 cup water in a pitcher and stir gently until uniform. Chill or serve over ice. This reduces richness and fat slightly; adjust dilution to taste.

3

Sweetened vanilla milk

Pour 4 cups whole milk into a small saucepan. Add 2 tablespoons sugar and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Warm gently over low heat while stirring until sugar dissolves (do not boil). Once sugar is dissolved and the milk is warm, remove from heat and cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until chilled. Serve cold.

4

Warm milk

Pour 4 cups whole milk into a small saucepan. Warm over low to medium-low heat, stirring occasionally to prevent a skin from forming and to avoid scalding. If using a thermometer, heat until 140°F–160°F (60°C–71°C) for pleasantly warm milk. Do not boil. Remove from heat and serve immediately, optionally stirring in 1 teaspoon salt for savory preparations or 1–2 teaspoons sugar and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla for sweetened warm milk.

5

Seasoning

If preparing milk for a savory recipe (e.g., béchamel base), add 1 teaspoon salt to the milk when warming and whisk to combine. Adjust salt to taste before using in the recipe.

Equipment & Serving

6

Use a clean saucepan to warm milk; use low heat and stir frequently to prevent scorching. A thermometer helps avoid overheating. Transfer chilled milk to a clean pitcher for serving. Use a ladle or pour directly into glasses.

7

Storage: Keep unused milk refrigerated at or below 40°F (4°C) and consume within 3–5 days of opening (follow milk carton guidelines). If milk was warmed, cool quickly and refrigerate; discard if left at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
