Prepare oranges
Wash the oranges thoroughly under cool running water to remove any wax or dirt. Pat them dry with a clean towel.
Juice the oranges
Cut each orange in half crosswise. Using a handheld juicer, electric citrus press, or reamer, juice all orange halves into a large measuring cup or bowl. If using a blender, peel the oranges, remove as much of the white pith as possible, then blend until smooth and strain through a fine mesh sieve for a smoother juice.
Measure and adjust
Check the volume of freshly squeezed orange juice. For about 6 medium oranges expect roughly 2 to 2 1/2 cups of juice. Add up to 1 cup cold water if you prefer a lighter, less intensely flavored juice. Stir in 1 teaspoon granulated sugar if the juice tastes too tart. Add 1 teaspoon lemon juice to brighten flavor if desired and 1/8 teaspoon salt to enhance sweetness (optional). Taste and adjust sugar, water, or lemon juice as needed.
Chill and serve
Fill glasses with ice cubes (about 1 cup divided among glasses). Pour the orange juice over the ice. Stir briefly and serve immediately for best flavor. If making ahead, chill the juice in the refrigerator in a covered pitcher for up to 48 hours; stir or shake before serving as natural separation may occur.
