Boulevardier Cocktail

Method

Boulevardier Cocktail

1

Chill glass

Place the rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink to lightly chill the serving glass. Discard the ice water before pouring.

2

Measure and combine

Add 1.5 oz bourbon, 1 oz Campari, 1 oz sweet vermouth, and 1 dash Angostura bitters into a mixing glass or pint glass.

3

Add ice

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes (enough to reach near the top of the liquid, about 4–6 cubes). Large cubes dilute more slowly and produce a clearer, colder drink.

4

Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full rotations). Stirring chills and slightly dilutes the drink, smoothing the sharp edges and integrating the flavors. Aim for a slight frost on the outside of the mixing glass.

5

Strain

Use a Hawthorne or julep strainer to strain the cocktail into the chilled rocks glass. Serve over a single large ice cube if desired, or neat in the chilled glass.

6

Garnish

Express the oils of an orange peel over the surface by holding the peel skin-side down and giving it a quick twist; run the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink. Alternatively, garnish with a cocktail cherry on a pick.

7

Serve

Present the Boulevardier immediately. Advise sipping slowly to appreciate the bittersweet balance between bourbon, Campari, and sweet vermouth.

Tools & Cleanup
