Espresso and water

Method

Espresso and water

1

Heat water

Bring water to just below boiling (about 90–95°C / 195–205°F). If using an electric kettle with temperature control, set it to that range. If not, bring to a boil and let rest for 30–45 seconds.

2

Brew espresso

Pull two shots of espresso (about 60 ml total). Use 18–20 g of coffee for a double shot if using a portafilter. Brew directly into the serving cup if possible to minimize heat loss.

3

Combine espresso and water

Pour the 6 oz (about 180 ml) of hot water into the serving cup first OR pour over the espresso depending on preferred technique: standard americano is espresso first then add water to preserve crema, but many baristas pour water into the cup then add espresso. Add the two shots of espresso to the hot water and gently stir once to combine.

4

Adjust strength

Taste and, if the drink is too strong, add up to 1 oz (30 ml) more hot water. For a longer americano, use more water; for a ristretto-based americano, reduce water slightly to keep a bolder flavor.

Optional additions

5

Sugar or syrup: If using sweetener, stir in granulated sugar (about 1 tsp) while the drink is hot so it dissolves, or add 1 tsp simple syrup.

6

Milk or cream: Add the milk or cream to taste. If you prefer textured milk, steam or froth about 1–2 tbsp and spoon on top; for an Americano con leche, add 1–2 oz (30–60 ml) warmed milk.

7

Citrus twist: Optionally garnish with a lemon twist by expressing oils over the cup and dropping the peel in (more common with iced or filtered Americanos for a bright note).
