Espresso
Milk / Dairy Substitute
Sweetener & Flavoring (optional)
Ice & Garnish (for iced or finishing)
Method
Espresso
Dose and tamp
Weigh 18 g of espresso beans (or use 18 g pre-ground) and grind to a fine espresso grind. Distribute evenly in the portafilter and tamp with consistent pressure to create a flat compact puck.
Brew
Brew a double shot of espresso aiming for 36–40 ml (yield) in about 25–30 seconds using filtered water heated to 92–96°C (198–205°F). Adjust grind if extraction is too fast or slow.
Milk / Dairy Substitute
Hot preparation (steamed milk)
If serving hot: steam 8 oz of your chosen milk to 60–65°C (140–149°F) with a slight microfoam. Tap and swirl the pitcher to remove large bubbles and achieve velvety texture. Pour steamed milk over espresso, holding back foam with a spoon if a thinner foam is desired, or finish with latte art.
Sweetener & Flavoring (optional)
Add 1 tbsp simple syrup or 1/2 tbsp flavored syrup to the cup or glass before adding espresso for even distribution. If using vanilla extract instead of syrup, add 1 tsp to the milk and whisk briefly before steaming or pouring. Taste and adjust sweetness to preference (add more syrup by 1/4 tbsp increments).
Ice & Garnish (for iced or finishing)
For iced latte: top with additional ice if desired. For hot latte: spoon a thin layer of milk foam on top. Optionally dust with 1/4–1 tsp ground cinnamon or cocoa as a garnish.
