Method
Cocktail
Chill glass
Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail. This keeps the drink cold longer.
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz vodka, 1 oz triple sec (Cointreau), 0.5 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz cranberry juice, and 0.25 oz simple syrup if you prefer a slightly sweeter drink.
Add ice and shake
Fill the shaker with about 1 cup of ice (enough to nearly fill the shaker). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels very cold and slightly frosty.
Prepare glass
If you chilled the glass with ice water, empty and dry it. Optionally, rub a freshly cut lime wheel around the rim for aroma.
Double strain and serve
Using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine (mesh) strainer, double-strain the cocktail into the chilled martini or coupe glass to remove small ice shards and pulp for a silky texture.
Garnish
Express the oils of an orange peel over the surface by holding the peel skin-side down above the drink and giving it a firm squeeze, then either drop the peel into the drink or discard. Alternatively, float a thin lime wheel on the rim or in the drink.
Final note
Serve immediately while cold. Adjust sweetness by increasing or omitting the simple syrup and adjust cranberry for color and tartness to taste.
