Coffee Base

Method

Prepare equipment

1

Warm cup and kettle

Preheat your serving cup by rinsing with hot water (discard rinse). Bring fresh water to just off boiling (about 200–205°F / 93–96°C).

Brew espresso

2

If using an espresso machine: grind coffee to a fine espresso grind (or use pre-ground). Dose about 18–20 g for a double shot (two shots). Tamp evenly and pull a double shot (about 2 shots) directly into your warmed cup. If making decaf, use decaf espresso beans and the same technique.

Add hot water

3

Pour approximately 6 oz (about 180 ml) of hot water into the cup with the espresso. For a classic Americano, pour hot water over the espresso (espresso-first method) to preserve crema and flavor. Stir gently once to combine. Adjust water to taste: use more water for a milder cup or less for a stronger cup.

Optional finishing

4

If you like milk: steam or heat about 1 oz milk and add to the Americano for a smoother texture (this becomes a 'long black with milk' or diluted americano). Sweeten with sugar, sweetener, or flavored syrup to taste — start with 1 tsp sugar or 1/2 tbsp syrup and adjust. Stir gently to combine.

Serve

5

Serve immediately while hot. Provide a spoon for stirring if you included any syrup or sugar.
