Method

Preparing the Dough

1

Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water (1.5 cups) and sugar (1 tbs). Sprinkle the active dry yeast (2 tbs) on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

2

Mix Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour (4 cups) and salt (1 tsp). Add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil (2 tbs). Stir until a dough forms.

3

Knead Dough

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Shaping the Pretzels

4

Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

5

Shape Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope (about 24 inches), then shape into a pretzel.

Baking the Pretzels

6

Prepare Soda Bath

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling, add 2 cups of baking soda. Be careful as it will bubble up.

7

Boil Pretzels

Gently place each pretzel into the boiling soda bath for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.

8

Add Toppings

Brush each pretzel with melted butter (1 tbs) and sprinkle with coarse sea salt (1 tbs).

9

Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.
