Method

Prepare the Sushi Roll

  1. 1

    Cook Sushi Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Cook the rice according to package instructions, usually in a rice cooker or on the stove. Once cooked, let it cool slightly.

  2. 2

    Prepare Nori and Fillings

Lay a nori sheet on a bamboo sushi mat, shiny side down. Wet your hands to prevent sticking and spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge.

  3. 3

    Add Fillings

Place slices of hamachi, a strip of cream cheese, and sliced avocado in the center of the rice-covered nori.

  4. 4

    Roll the Sushi

Using the sushi mat, carefully roll the nori away from you, applying gentle pressure to form a tight roll. Seal the edge of the nori with a little water.

Fry the Roll

  1. 5

    Prepare for Frying

Heat oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Prepare the tempura batter according to package instructions.

  2. 6

    Coat and Fry

Dip the sushi roll into the tempura batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Roll it in panko breadcrumbs for added crunch. Carefully place the roll in the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Add Toppings

  1. 7

    Prepare Toppings

Mix the spicy crab with a little mayonnaise to taste. Prepare the unagi sauce and wasabi mayo.

  2. 8

    Plate and Serve

Slice the fried roll into bite-sized pieces. Drizzle with unagi sauce and dollop with wasabi mayo. Top with the spicy crab mix and serve immediately.
