Method

Preparing Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse and Soak Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rinsed rice in water for 30 minutes.

  2. 2

    Cook the Rice

In a rice cooker or pot, combine soaked rice and 2.5 cups of water. Cook according to rice cooker instructions or bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for 10 minutes.

  3. 3

    Season the Rice

In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Gently fold this mixture into the warm rice using a wooden spoon. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.

Preparing Fillings

  1. 4

    Prepare the Avocado

Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop out the flesh. Slice it into thin strips.

  2. 5

    Prepare the Cucumber

Wash the cucumber, cut off the ends, and slice it into thin strips.

  3. 6

    Prepare the Crab

If using imitation crab, pull it apart into shreds. If using real crab, ensure it's cooked and shredded.

Rolling the Sushi

  1. 7

    Assemble the Sushi

Lay a bamboo sushi mat on a clean surface. Place a nori sheet shiny side down on the mat.

  2. 8

    Spread the Rice

Wet your hands with water to prevent sticking. Take a handful of sushi rice and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.

  3. 9

    Add Fillings

Place a line of crab meat, avocado strips, and cucumber strips horizontally across the center of the rice.

  4. 10

    Roll the Sushi

Lift the edge of the mat closest to you and start rolling it away from you, pressing gently to shape the roll. Continue rolling until you reach the border of the nori.

  5. 11

    Seal the Roll

Moisten the top border of the nori with a little water to help seal the roll. Finish rolling and place the seam side down.

  6. 12

    Slice the Roll

Use a sharp knife to slice the roll into 6-8 pieces. Wipe the knife with a damp cloth between each cut for clean edges.
