1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine the red wine, orange juice, sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, star anise, orange slices, and honey.

2. If using brandy, add it now (or wait to add after warming to preserve the alcohol).

3. Warm over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is just steaming and small bubbles form around the edges. Do not let it boil.

4. Reduce heat to low and let the flavors infuse for 15-20 minutes, tasting and adjusting sweetness if desired.

5. Strain the mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs. Serve warm, and optionally garnish with a thin orange wheel or a cinnamon stick.
