Method
Cocktail Base
- 1
Measure and combine
Chill an Old Fashioned glass by filling it with ice or placing it in the freezer for a few minutes. In a mixing glass, add 2 oz aged bourbon, 0.5 oz orange liqueur, 0.5 oz sweet vermouth, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.25 oz maple syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.
- 2
Add ice and stir
Fill the mixing glass with large, cold ice cubes. Stir the mixture for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full strokes) until well chilled and slightly diluted—aim for a silky texture and temperature around 20°F (-6°C) at the stirring surface.
- 3
Prepare serving glass
If you chilled the Old Fashioned glass, discard the ice or remove from the freezer. Place one large ice cube in the glass.
- 4
Strain
Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared Old Fashioned glass over the single large ice cube, leaving the cocktail smooth and clear.

Final touches
Drop the expressed orange peel into the drink or place it on the rim. Optionally, add one Luxardo cherry skewered on a pick and rest it on the ice. Serve immediately.
