Hot Americano

Method

Hot Americano

1

Prepare espresso

Pull two shots of espresso (about 60 ml total) using an espresso machine. Aim for 18–25 seconds extraction time depending on your grind and machine. If using a stovetop Moka pot or strong brewed coffee as substitute, make a concentrated 60 ml brew.

2

Heat water

Heat water to just off boiling (about 90–96°C / 195–205°F). Measure approximately 6 fl oz (about 180 ml).

3

Combine

Pour the two hot espresso shots into a warmed 8–10 oz cup. Add the hot water on top of the espresso. The traditional ratio is about 1:3 (espresso : water) but adjust to taste. Stir gently to combine.

4

Sweeten (optional)

If you want sweetness, add the teaspoon of sugar or sweetener and stir until dissolved. Serve immediately.

Iced Americano

5

Prepare espresso

Pull two shots of espresso (about 60 ml total). If you prefer less dilution from ice, pull the shots over ice in an inverted metal pitcher or chill briefly in the fridge.

6

Fill glass with ice

Fill a tall glass (12–16 oz) with 6 ice cubes or enough to reach near the top. Using plenty of ice helps keep the drink cold and reduces dilution from added cold water.

7

Combine

Pour the two espresso shots over the ice. Add about 6 fl oz (180 ml) of cold water. Stir gently to mix and chill the espresso with the water and ice.

8

Sweeten (optional)

If using sweetener, add the simple syrup (easier to dissolve than granulated sugar) and stir until incorporated. Taste and adjust water or espresso strength if desired. Serve immediately with a straw.
