Chocolate Sauce & Garnish
Method
Matcha Frappe Base
Bloom matcha
Sift 2 tsp matcha powder into a small bowl to remove clumps. Add the 1 tablespoon cooled strong brewed green tea (or 1 tbsp hot water cooled) and whisk briskly in a zigzag motion until smooth and slightly frothy with no lumps.
Sweeten and combine
Add 2 tsp granulated sugar and 1 tsp vanilla extract to the whisked matcha and stir until dissolved.
Blend frappe
In a blender add 2 cups ice, 1 cup whole milk and the prepared matcha mixture. Secure lid and blend on high for 30–60 seconds until the texture is smooth and slushy with no large ice chunks. Taste and adjust sweetness (add up to 1 more tsp sugar if desired), then pulse once to recombine.
Chocolate Crunch
Make chocolate crunch
Place 2 tbsp chopped dark chocolate and 1 tsp unsalted butter in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 10–15 second bursts, stirring between bursts, until melted and smooth. Stir in 1 oz crushed chocolate wafer cookies or chocolate cereal until evenly coated. Spread the mixture in a thin layer on a small plate or parchment and let it cool for 5–10 minutes until slightly set but still crunchy. Break into small pieces.
Optional toasting
If you prefer extra crunch, toast the crushed cookie/cereal in a dry skillet over medium heat for 1–2 minutes before mixing with chocolate, stirring constantly to avoid burning.
Assemble & Garnish
Prep glass
Drizzle 1 tablespoon (from the 2 tbsp) chocolate sauce around the inside of a tall serving glass. This creates decorative stripes. Reserve the remaining chocolate sauce for topping.
Pour frappe
Pour the blended matcha frappe into the prepared glass, leaving about 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the top for whipped cream.
Top with whipped cream and sauce
Pipe or dollop chilled whipped cream (about 1/2 to 3/4 cup per serving) on top of the frappe. Drizzle the remaining chocolate sauce over the whipped cream.
Add chocolate crunch and finish
Sprinkle the prepared chocolate crunch pieces over the whipped cream. Dust lightly with 1 tsp matcha powder and scatter optional chocolate chips or shavings if using. Serve immediately with a wide straw and long spoon.
