Vanilla Ice Cream Scoop

Method

Prepare Tools and Ice Cream

1

Soften ice cream slightly

Remove the pint or container of vanilla ice cream from the freezer and let it sit at room temperature for 2–4 minutes. You want it slightly softened so it scoops cleanly but not melted.

2

Chill or wet the scoop

Dip the ice cream scoop in a small bowl of cold water for 5–10 seconds or add the teaspoon of cold water or neutral oil to the scoop and swirl. This prevents sticking and helps form a smooth ball.

Form the Scoop

3

Scoop technique

Hold the bowl steady with one hand. Press the scoop into the ice cream with a firm, sweeping motion, digging in and pulling toward you to form a rounded ball. If the ice cream resists, let it soften another minute and repeat. Use the scoop's edge to release the ball cleanly into the center of the serving bowl.

4

If you used water or oil on the scoop, quickly wipe excess off the handle before scooping additional toppings to avoid drips.

Assemble Toppings (optional)

5

Sauces

Warm the hot fudge or caramel sauce briefly (5–10 seconds) in the microwave if thick; drizzle the measured tablespoon of hot fudge or teaspoon of caramel over the ice cream scoop in a slow circular motion so it lightly coats the top.

6

Crunch and color

Sprinkle the teaspoon of chopped nuts and/or rainbow sprinkles evenly over the sauce or directly onto the ice cream for texture and visual appeal.

7

Fresh fruit

Arrange the three fresh berry pieces around the base of the scoop or place them on top for a fresh contrast.

8

Finish

Add a tablespoon of whipped cream on one side of the scoop (if using) and top with the maraschino cherry. Insert the wafer cookie or waffle piece at a slight angle into the scoop for garnish.

Serve

9

Present the single-scoop dessert immediately on the small dessert bowl or cup. Serve with a small spoon. Enjoy immediately to preserve texture and temperature.

10

If not serving right away, return the pint to the freezer and keep the assembled scoop chilled (not recommended to keep assembled for more than 10 minutes).
