Sandwich
For warming / finishing (optional)
Method
Sandwich assembly
Prepare the rolls
Slice each sandwich roll or ciabatta in half horizontally. Spread about 1 teaspoon mayonnaise on the bottom half of each roll and 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard on the top half of each roll (adjust to taste).
Season the turkey ham
Lightly sprinkle about 1/8 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper across the turkey ham slices (split across all slices). This adds a subtle seasoning; if your ham is already salty, omit the salt.
Build the sandwich
Place two slices of turkey ham on the bottom half of each roll (use 8 slices total for 4 sandwiches). Top the ham with one slice of cheddar cheese on each sandwich. If using, add two dill pickle slices and one leaf of lettuce on top of the cheese.
Optional warming / toasting
Pan-sear (preferred for crisped exterior)
Melt 1/2 tablespoon butter in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Place assembled sandwiches (open-faced) cheese-side up in the skillet and cover with a pan lid for 30–60 seconds to help the cheese start to melt. Close the sandwich and place back in the skillet, pressing lightly with a spatula or use a second skillet to weigh down; cook ~1–2 minutes per side until golden and cheese is melted. Repeat for remaining sandwiches. Add a teaspoon of water to the pan and reseal for a quick steam if needed to melt cheese faster.
Oven/toaster oven
Preheat oven or toaster oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the outside of rolls with the remaining melted butter (about 1/2 tbs per sandwich total) or lightly coat with olive oil. Place assembled sandwiches on a baking sheet and heat 6–8 minutes, or until cheese melts and bread is golden. For a crispier top, broil 1 minute—watch carefully to avoid burning.
Cold (no warming)
If you prefer a cold sandwich, simply close the sandwich, slice in half if desired, and serve immediately.
Finish and serve
Taste and adjust final seasoning with a light sprinkle of the remaining salt and pepper if desired. Serve warm or cold with pickles, chips, or a side salad. Makes 4 sandwiches (1 sandwich per serving).
