Method

Cocktail

1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or chilled cocktail glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink to get it nicely chilled.

2

Combine ingredients

Add 1.5 oz white rum, 0.5 oz Cointreau (or triple sec), 0.75 oz dry vermouth, 0.25 oz grenadine, and 0.25 oz fresh lime juice into a cocktail shaker.

3

Add ice and shake

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup). Seal and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the outside of the shaker is cold and slightly frosted. This both chills and dilutes the cocktail to proper balance.

4

Prepare glass

If you chilled the glass with ice water, dump out the water now. If it was in the freezer, remove it and make sure it’s dry.

5

Strain

Double-strain the mixture into the chilled coupe or cocktail glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer (or a single fine strainer if you have one) to remove small ice shards for a silky texture.

6

Garnish and serve

Express an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down and giving it a quick twist above the surface to release oils, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the drink as garnish. Serve immediately.
