Method

Sandwich

1

Prepare bread

Split the bread or rolls horizontally. Lightly spread the inside faces of both halves with the softened butter. If you prefer a toasted exterior, brush the outsides with olive oil or spray lightly with cooking spray.

2

Make spread

In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise and Dijon mustard. Stir until smooth. Spread the mayo-mustard mixture evenly over the inside face of one bread half.

3

Layer meats and cheese

On the mayo-mustard–coated half, layer 3 slices of ham evenly, then 3 slices of salami. Place two slices of cheese over the meats so they cover them. If your bread is large or you prefer more filling, arrange the remaining ham, salami and cheese in a second stack on the same sandwich (use all slices listed).

4

Add produce and season

Top the cheese with lettuce leaves, tomato slices, red onion rings and pickles or banana peppers if using. Lightly season the tomato and lettuce with the measured black pepper. Close the sandwich with the other bread half (buttered side out if toasting).

5

Toast or press (optional)

If you want a warm, melty sandwich, preheat a skillet or panini press over medium heat. Place the sandwich buttered side down on the skillet, press gently with a spatula (or use a press), and cook 2–3 minutes until golden. Flip and cook another 2–3 minutes until the cheese softens and bread is golden. If using a panini press, cook 3–5 minutes until heated through.

6

Slice and serve

Transfer the sandwich to a cutting board. Let rest 1 minute, then slice in half diagonally or down the middle. Serve immediately.
