Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare espresso

Brew a fresh shot of espresso (about 1 oz). If you prefer the drink cold and want less dilution, cool the espresso briefly by setting it in the fridge or at room temperature for a few minutes before use.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add 1.5 oz vecchio amaro, 1 oz coffee liqueur, 1 oz fresh espresso, and 0.25 oz simple syrup if you want a touch of sweetness. The syrup is optional because many amari and coffee liqueurs are already sweet.

  3. 3

    Shake

Shake vigorously for 12–18 seconds until the shaker is very cold and the exterior is frosty. This chills and slightly dilutes the drink and creates a slight crema from the espresso.

  4. 4

    Strain and serve

Double-strain (or fine strain) into a chilled coupe or rocks glass over one large ice cube (if serving on the rocks) or neat in a chilled coupe. Double-straining removes small ice shards and preserves a smooth texture and crema.

Garnish

  1. 5

Float or place 3 coffee beans on the surface or on the rim for aroma and presentation. Optionally express an orange twist over the drink to release oils, then drop the twist in or discard according to preference.
