Method
Espresso / Coffee Base
Brew espresso
Pull two shots (about 60 ml) of fresh espresso. If you prefer a milder base or don't have an espresso machine, brew 60–90 ml of very strong coffee (use double the usual grounds).
Optional americano
For a longer drink, add 60 ml hot water to the espresso to make an americano base.
Milk & Foam (Hot Version)
Heat and froth milk
Steam or gently heat 200 ml whole milk to 60–65°C (140–150°F). Froth or whisk until silky microfoam forms. Reserve ~2 tbsp foam for topping.
Combine the hot espresso with 15 ml simple syrup and 7 ml vanilla syrup (if using) in your serving cup. Pour the steamed milk over the espresso, holding back foam with a spoon and then spooning foam on top. Sprinkle chocolate shavings or cocoa and a little orange zest if desired.
Iced Version
Sweeten espresso
While the espresso is hot, stir in 15 ml simple syrup and 7 ml vanilla syrup (if using). This ensures the sweetener dissolves evenly.
Assemble iced drink
Fill a tall glass with 1 cup of ice cubes. Pour the sweetened espresso over the ice. Add 150 ml cold milk and gently stir to combine. For a layered look, pour milk first then espresso over the back of a spoon. Garnish with a dusting of cocoa or chocolate shavings and a touch of orange zest if desired.
Finishing & Serving
Serve hot version immediately while foam is fresh. Serve iced version with a straw and stirrer. Adjust sweetness to taste by increasing or decreasing the simple syrup and vanilla syrup amounts.
